The King 2 Hearts

So I've finished episodes 7 and 8 and boy, what a wild ride.  I think I have whiplash. I can't remember the last time I cried so much over a drama.

Spoilers after the jump....

Hang-ah, how are you so awesome?  I totally have a girl crush on her now.  She's suffering along with the rest of the family because Jae-kang was her biggest support as a stranger in a strange land.  But instead of moping or feeling sorry for herself or feeling slighted because she's being shut out by the family during their time of grief, she begs for some way to help.  When no one will give it to her, she find something she CAN do.  Namely, weed the garden that Jae-ha's mom regularly tends.  Knowing that Mom is full on overwhelmed, this is something she can do for her and, by extension, the rest of the family to relieve some of her burden.  And when the court ladies try to stop her, she puts them to work. LOVE HER!!!

Also, how cute was Jae-ha when he saw her in there.  It reminded me of the scene earlier in the series when he visited his mom in there with his brother.  That garden is a part of their private family life.  By tending that garden, Hang-ah is tending the family.  She's showing a willingness to do the dirty work to keep the family healthy.   That's proven once again when she goes to the hospital and helps Jae-shin through her lowest moment since the accident.  She is not phased by the "dirty work" here either.  She just does what needs to be done to help Jae-shin through her despair and then cover up what happened so that Jae-shin doesn't end up with an unfortunate nickname.  ("Poopy Princess" Ha!)

And that leads me to the last moment of awesomeness between Hang-ah and her future mother-in-law in the kitchen.  It would be so easy for their relationship to be cold and fraught with misunderstandings but for one thing:  They both give each other a break.  It's called empathy people, and it's one of the reasons this royal family in this drama is so awesome.  They have kindness and empathy for each other.  Hang-ah gets offended by things Mom says, but doesn't hold a grudge because she knows Mom is trying to help.  And Mom, rather than getting upset or jealous like some other k-drama mamas, is grateful to Hang-ah for helping Jae-shin.  Awesome!

And then there's how she takes care of Jae-ha.  This episode really needed a light moment and boy did it deliver. Her attempt at being cutesy was so totally ridiculous and you could see that Jae-ha was loving every minute of it even if he was laughing.   And then finally, after choking his tears back the entire episode, Jae-ha's  letting go in her arms.  Yeah, I got whiplash.  Sweet, sweet whiplash.

So, anyway, my point is that we already know Hang-ah is a badass. The first time we see her she's wiping the floor with her opponent.  But there's more than one way to be badass.  Now we are seeing that Hang-ah has depth and strength of a whole other kind.  Well rounded female characters--more of this, please!
